To coincide with this summer’s Commonwealth Games, the Millennium Point Trust has announced the award of a £22,000 grant to Aston Villa Foundation, to help the charity broaden its schools outreach programme, which aims to engage and inspire young people to experience STEM through sport.
The project will be delivered as education activations to over 1,300 pupils at 22 different Birmingham schools, primarily within the Foundation’s target constituencies of Perry Barr, Ladywood and Erdington.
These will take place on 22 different days, providing an introductory coding session to the children, teachers and schools. It will run until the end of the Autumn Term 2022 and coincide with the start of the Commonwealth Games, as well as a post-games legacy piece of work.
Teaching core attributes of Commonwealth competitors
The school workshops will feature Commonwealth Games themes such as Athletes, Stadiums, Perry the Mascot, Sports and Events – as well as embedding core values such as resilience, working together and desire to achieve – all key attributes of Commonwealth competitors.
Paul Hughes, Schools Manager at Aston Villa Foundation, commented: “The funding from Millennium Point is greatly appreciated to allow us to be a driving force for STEM Education in Birmingham. By providing unique learning experiences, the resources and opportunities to experience technology our aim is to help and guide children to develop their skill set for an ever-advancing technological world.”

When Millennium Point heard about LoveBrum’s volunteering opportunities, they were eager to get involved. Earlier this month a few members of the Millennium Point team joined Moor Pool Heritage Trust to help tend to the green spaces. Once overgrown, the space’s pathways are visible once more for all to enjoy.
Who are LoveBrum?
LoveBrum is a registered charity that supports hidden gem projects across Birmingham that are often volunteer led and that deliver real change, with outcomes that can be seen, measured, enjoyed, and loved.
They support the ‘hard-to-reach’ projects, those causes that do not receive the platform or funding that they probably deserve. LoveBrum aim to support over 30 projects per year, and to reach out to all corners of the city to remind people how great Birmingham is. Every penny raised from individual memberships and fundraising stays in Birmingham and goes straight to the chosen causes.
LoveBrum have funded almost 200 local, hard to reach causes, ran 11 successful fundraising events raising over £200,000 to fund Birmingham projects. Since beginning LoveBrum now have over 1,000 members who are passionate about Birmingham.
Who are Moor Pool Heritage Trust?
The Moor Pool Heritage Trust is a charity born out of the Moor Pool Residents Association in 2011, formed specifically to acquire the community facilities for the benefit of the local and wider community. Following this success, the Trust now strives to protect and preserve Moor Pool for the benefit of future generations, but also to ensure it raises awareness of its importance to the wider public.
We caught up with one volunteer, Vanessa, Head of PLD at Millennium Point to find out how the day went
As a charity we are keen to help and support other local charities and we were quick to respond when LoveBrum asked if anyone would like to volunteer to help Moor Pool Heritage Trust, based in Harborne who were looking for a team to help tend to their green spaces as they had become rather overgrown! This was a fantastic opportunity to give something back to our local community and do something to help Moor Pool residents and schools.
The day was amazing from start to finish – the team at Moor Pool looked after us like we were family, the sun was shining and after a quick tour around we were soon chopping down a massively overgrown orchard area used by local schools, weeding outside the community hall, and clearing pathways. The results were amazing and rewarding as the outcome of our work was quickly visible. We may have picked up a few stings from the very tall stinging nettles and scratches from brambles, but the team worked seamlessly together to get the work done. It was quickly apparent how easy the work seemed to be as we were truly working as a team. The day is one that we would like to repeat, and I think each one of us took away a secret wish to move one day to Moor Pool estate to live. It is only a short distance from the city centre but is has a rich history and is a real hidden gem to visit.
Why did Millennium Point volunteer?
Millennium Point recently became a patron for LoveBrum who offered us the opportunity to volunteer. As a community driven organisation, we are eager to support activities that can benefit the city and the region. By teaming up, we can make a better future for all.
This isn’t the only way we try to help; we are a strong supporter of STEM education and provide funds for grants, projects, and scholarships. You can keep up to date with all our latest news on the Trust here.

The Auditorium is so impactful and offers such a range of technical provisions for clients. Platform looks like it belongs on a spaceship, and I like the different aspects of the space and that is manages to blend itself perfectly to all event types. I have never seen a space transform so much from an exhibition to an awards ceremony so effectively.’
Vik, the Event Sales Manager, adds ‘I couldn’t agree more! The giant screen creates the wow factor, and it offers clients a great alternative to a traditional cabaret layout. However, I would add that our space Connect has versatility which makes it a client favourite for a breadth of smaller events. from board and team meetings right through to workshops, training and away days.’

Did you know that the Queen officially opened our landmark building 20 years ago?
On Tuesday 2nd July 2002, the Queen officially unveiled Millennium Point. The Queen was visiting the West Midlands as part of her Golden Jubilee tour around Britain. When at Millennium Point, she expressed that she had no doubt Millennium Point would be used to ‘inspire the next generation who will shape the technology and industry of tomorrow’.
To celebrate the Queen reigning for 70 years, we’ve put together some royally grand things Birmingham’s Eastside has to offer over the bank holiday weekend from family activities to places to grab a refreshing pint.
Fun for all the “royal” family
Treat the kids to a scientific journey of discovery with a visit to the award-winning Thinktank Science Museum. Explore space by visiting the Planetarium, where the theatre is under a dome, specially designed to help you explore astronomy, space and the night sky. There’s something for everyone to enjoy on their food and drinks menu and entertainment nights. Also, they sell the cheapest coffee on campus and have different deals every day. Every penny you spend also goes back into the Students’ Union at BCU. Although rumour has it, it’s a little haunted, it is still one to visit!

The event saw digital employers including Goldman Sachs, Avanti West Coast, Pinsent Masons and Intercity Technology meet with 165 young women from schools across the West Midlands, at an event designed to raise awareness of careers in digital and technology, and in turn help improve diversity and encourage social mobility in the sector.
Following the success of three previous #GirlTechWM events funded by Millennium Point Trust and delivered by Ahead Partnership, this year’s event took place at Millennium Point in Birmingham on 29 April and saw 12-14 year-olds from 11 secondary schools across the region meet face-to-face with female role models working at organisations that employ digital talent. For many students this was the first opportunity to meet employers in person since the start of the pandemic.
Throughout this exciting tech and digital careers experience day, the young women had the opportunity to hear inspiring guest speeches from professionals including Jennifer Wait from Goldman Sachs and Amy Elliot, placement coordinator at SUMO Digital. The students also got involved in interactive workshops where they were able to ask questions to professionals already succeeding in roles like Senior Business Analyst, Placement Programmer and Chief People Officer, and a large scale challenge hosted by Avanti West Coast.
After learning about the different roles available to them and the skills required to succeed, 95% of the female students that attended said that they understood what skills they need to get into digital following the event. Meanwhile, the number of young women interested in digital careers following the event was an impressive 87%.
Stephanie Burras CBE, chief executive of Ahead Partnership, said:
“Our #GirlTech events are extremely popular and effective, with volunteers from a diverse range of businesses and organisations keen to get involved, share their experiences and promote the opportunities available within the digital and tech sector to young women beyond school.
“Our recent West Midlands event at Millennium Point was a great success; the feedback that we have received shows that the students found it really informative and the wide range of organisations involved demonstrates the real breadth of opportunity available to those hoping to thrive in a digital career. We targeted the event at young women in years eight and nine to help them apply their learning from the day when making their GCSE subject choices, and the students reported that #GirlTechWM has really helped to equip them with the knowledge and confidence to pursue their own paths in this thriving sector.”
Abbie Vlahakis, Chief Executive of Millennium Point Trust, also commented:
“#GirlTechWM is a really important initiative; we’re proud to work with Ahead Partnership to bring so many employers and young women together for a day of careers learning and inspiration.
“The event is always a fantastic opportunity for young women to meet with and learn from inspiring female role models pursuing successful careers in digital and technology – but it’s also a really rewarding experience for the businesses involved, enabling volunteers to make a meaningful contribution while showcasing the opportunities available for young women looking to succeed in tech roles at their own organisations.”
Sponsored by Millennium Point Trust, #GirlTechWM was free for schools to attend. Businesses involved in the wide range of activities taking place throughout the day were Avanti West Coast; Pinsent Masons; Sumo Digital; Goldman Sachs; Intercity Technology; Spica; Lanchester Archive; Allianz; SES Engineering; BAM Construction; and InMoment.

Last #GirlTechWM events have showing excellent results in improving awareness. Ahead Partnership wrote how a past event encouraged a 155% increase. ‘Seeking to initiate real change, activity was targeted at Year 8 students and focused on reaching out to young people of typically underrepresented demographics in the sector before they make important decisions about their future pathways. Successfully raising awareness and promoting interest in technology careers, the event encouraged a 155% increase in the number of students that were now considering working in digital compared to before the event.’
