Millennium Point wins Excellence in Hospitality & Retail award at 2021 Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Awards.
We received the award due to the fundamental role our landmark venue has played in protecting the region, and leading hospitality, during the pandemic – including our rapid response to covid-19 and becoming the first mass vaccination centre in the West Midlands. The announcement was made on Tuesday night in the prestigious awards ceremony held online via the Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce website.
We are delighted to see the hard work of our team recognised and rewarded after a such a difficult period of time for the industry. Despite the pandemic limiting a lot of activity across the country, our venue excelled in highlighting how professional and robust we are as an events and conference venue.
Rebecca Delmore, Commercial Director added “Words cannot describe how proud I am of the whole Millennium Point team for achieving this milestone. This last year has been crippling for the events & hospitality industry. Our team has risen to the challenge and come out of it with some exceptional achievements which demonstrate what Millennium Point is all about.”
What have we achieved?
Bringing “normality” back
Our venue has remained agile and forward-thinking throughout the pandemic. Our venue was one of the first to publish a response to tackling the pandemic. In May 2020, we published our Client Protection Plan and implemented a number of safety measures in place to make our venue safe and secure for staff and visitors.
In the summer of 2020, we launched a programme of socially distanced film screenings to provide the public with entertainment and escapism during the restrictions. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive with film goers commenting they felt safe and appreciated the opportunity to ‘feel normal’.
Making history and protecting lives
Millennium Point made history in January of this year as we became the first Mass Vaccination Centre for the West Midlands. Our team worked diligently alongside the NHS Birmingham and Solihull, to transform our spaces ensuring we created a safe and welcoming environment for the public. Our staff went the extra mile and were on site and online 24/7 to aid staff, volunteers and the public as well as give information where necessary. The opening week of our vaccination centre saw top media outlets visit our venue including Sky News, BBC and Channel 4.
New and improved Auditorium
We didn’t stop there as we invested over £350,000 into upgrading our Auditorium, formerly the first IMAX in Birmingham, to include a larger stage and more sophisticated AV equipment, improved lighting, and rigging. Additionally, we transformed the projection room and reception areas into studio spaces where we have hosted a number of events including Q&As, Music Recordings and live streams.
The future of events
In May we ran our first ever Hybrid event in our new and improved Auditorium. Talking Point: The Future of Events, was a free to attend (physically or virtually) two hour conference that examined the roadmap to recovery for events and the rising importance of sustainability and corporate social responsibility. The event was a huge success and received positive feedback from attendees. We also saw a rise in enquiries for our new range of Hybrid and Virtual event packages.
Our diverse event spaces
We have a diverse mix of 17 event spaces here at Millennium Point, enabling us to provide a great deal of flexibility for clients. We have the benefit of having both public and private event spaces which means we can provide everything from a small meeting for three people to a large-scale public exhibition for up to 1500 people. With seminar spaces, a 354-seater Auditorium, bar area and flexible workspaces we pride ourselves on putting the customer first and work closely with our existing and prospective clients to deliver their event to the highest standard.

We hope you had the time of your life at ‘Dirty Dancing with Cocktails’.
We’d like to say a massive thanks for attending our recent event: Dirty Dancing with Cocktails last Saturday. We hope you thoroughly enjoyed your experience of watching the film on the giant screen in our newly refurbished Auditorium.
We were delighted with how the event unfolded, beginning with the fantastic trio performance in Platform, to the tasty cocktails and the main event on the big screen. We look forward to seeing you again at Millennium Point in the not so distant future, in the meantime you can keep up to date with our upcoming events by visiting our What’s On page.
How to make the themed cocktails
As promised by our friends at The Wine Events Company, the instructions below explain how you can recreate each of the four Dirty Dancing themed cocktails at home.
Kellerman Cooler
What you need:
- 60 ml white wine (Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio)
- 15 ml good vodka (cheap vodka will be the only thing you taste)
- 15 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 12.5 ml elderflower cordial
- 15 ml orange juice
Stir the above ingredients in a tall glass with cubed ice and top up with a dash of Sprite or 7UP, to sit on the top with a sprig of mint to garnish.
‘I Carried a Watermelon’ Daiquiri
What you need:
- 40 ml white rum, we used Barcardi
- 20 ml Aperol
- 20 ml sugar syrup (buy ready-made or make your own 50/50 sugar and water brought to the boil and left to cool)
- 20 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 50 ml watermelon juice (one large watermelon will give you approx one litre of juice – blitz it and the sieve it but you can buy watermelon juice in cartons)
Pop all the ingredients into a shaker, do the ‘mashed po-tater’ with your shaker, pour into a martin glass, tumbler or small wine glass, top up with crushed ice and add a piece of watermelon to the rim or a Haribo Watermelon Sour.
Thyme of My Life
What you need:
- 15 ml runny honey
- 15 ml sugar syrup
- 50 ml white rum
- 20 ml freshly squeezed lime juice
- 25 ml apple juice, not from concentrate
Add the above ingredients to a tall glass, stir well and then add ice. If you add honey to a glass with ice you’ll have a sticky lump in your glass that won’t dissolve. Top with a splash soda. Use a sprig of thyme to garnish but not before giving it a few slaps in the palm of your hand to release the oils and aromatics from the herb.
Nobody puts Baby in the Corner .. Star Martini
What you need:
- 40 ml vanilla vodka, we used Absolut
- 20 ml Passoa
- 15 ml Monin passion fruit syrup
- 20 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
Shaken vigorously over ice, poured into a martini glass and served with a shot of … Babycham.

Update: 19th July 2021
On Monday 19th July 2021, most lockdown restrictions have been lifted in England by the UK Government. Where a buffet option is chosen, gloves will be made available for guests to use when selecting their food.
- We will continue to run a cashless bar to minimise contact with our staff.
- Our event staff will be taking twice weekly lateral flow tests. We recommend advising delegates to get tested before attending your event to minimise risk. Additional measures can be discussed on enquiry.

Latest UK Government Advice on Coronavirus
NHS symptoms of Coronavirus
Update: 20th March 2020
In a bid to help mitigate the spread of Coronavirus, Millennium Point will be closed to the public, with immediate effect.
In line with action taken by our tenants Think Tank and Birmingham City University, we feel that this is necessary in order to play our part in reducing the spread of the virus. The safety of our staff, tenants, students and visitors is always our primary focus.
During this period, our facilities, security, maintenance and cleaning teams will maintain a presence on-site and unless the Government insists on total lockdown, contractors will still be visiting to make sure that we remain compliant with our statutory obligations. As a multi-purpose venue, we will inevitably have to postpone a number of planned events and activities, with full details to be provided via our channels as we move forward.
What should I do to prevent catching and spreading the virus?
Maximise the reach and impact of your next event with a hybrid or virtual package, now available from our multi-award-winning venue.
With four available to choose from, our hybrid and virtual event packages give you and your event greater flexibility and impact – making them an ideal choice for your event.
Packages available are:
- Package 1: HD Video Conferencing from £250
- Package 2: Studio Package (On Demand Recording) from £1200
- Package 3: Studio Package (Live Stream) from £1500
- Package 4: Auditorium Hybrid Conference (Live Stream) from £1750
Further details and demonstrations can be found on our dedicated page.
What’s a virtual event?
Virtual events are 100% online with no physical presence at the event. For example, this could be an online conference, presentation or webinar, where attendees watch via an online platform such as YouTube or Vimeo. An example of this type of event is demonstrated below.
What’s a hybrid event?
Hybrid events are slightly different to Virtual events, they combine physical attendance with an online presence. This allows for greater audience numbers as additional attendees can join virtually and enjoy the same content as the physical attendees. Hybrid events allow the same interaction within an event such as Q&A, whether your watching in person or virtually. An example of this type of event is demonstrated below.
Why choose one of these packages?
Virtual and Hybrid conference solutions are incredibly attractive in 2021. Pandemic aside, they offer greater flexibility to your event by minimising issues such as travel and accessibility due to being available remotely. They’re also less affected by local or global events, so less risk of postponing or cancelling your event.
You will reach a wider online audience. This not only gives your event more gravitas but gives you access to more data and insights, which helps grow your business and keep stakeholders happy. Lastly, this makes sponsorship more lucrative and therefore your event more attractive to sponsors or investors.
Explore our hybrid and virtual conference solutions today and see how we can help you make a big come back to events.

Profits from our commercial activity are invested by the Millennium Point Charitable Trust into projects, events and initiatives which support the growth of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and education in the West Midlands.
Every year, the Millennium Point Charitable Trust Small Grants programme gives out grants of up to £20,000 to support science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education projects in the West Midlands. We have funded many different projects across all areas of STEM, supporting learning development for young students.
Here is an example of the type of work we do, this project was funded in 2019 and shows the power of what the grants funding can achieve for STEM organisations.
Who are The Play House?
The Play House is a small theatre and education charity based inside Birmingham, who specialise in engaging schools through educational and interactive performances.
What’s the project all about?
The Play House are passionate about addressing learning gabs and developing children’s education within STEM, so they don’t miss out on career prospects. The Daughters of Invention project is a drama and engineering education project originally created through a Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious award.
The project is aimed towards girls and children from marginalised backgrounds, using interactive tasks, acting and storytelling, to develop the children’s interest and understanding of problem solving, creative thinking and team work within engineering.
What did the Millennium Point Trust fund?
After a successful first run in 2019, The Play House were eager to bring the project to new schools in areas of deprivation across Birmingham. The Millennium Point Charitable Trust offered a fantastic opportunity for the project to expand with it’s Small Grants offering. After receiving the application, our Trust team were immediately taken to this project by it’s unique creative dimension to teaching engineering, and made no hesitation in getting involved. Our funding helped the following areas of the project:
- Overheads for the production and delivery of the project (content creation, travel to schools etc.)
- Resources to produce and deliver the performances in schools
- Equipment to produce and deliver the performance in schools
What impact has the project made?
This project once again showcased the impact the Millennium Point Trust can have on young peoples lives. Over 240 children in 8 key stage 2 classes across 5 schools benefitted from the project, increasing their knowledge and understanding of engineering, while building confidence and awareness of careers within the subject.
The project also worked with the University of Birmingham, encouraging UOB students to get involved with STEM public engagement, while learning what impact it has on education in the local area.
The Play House were over the moon with the results and said: “Because of the grant from Millennium Point, The Play House is going to be inventing and creating with real-life engineers and KS2 children in Birmingham primary schools in 2020. Our STEM and drama project, Daughters of Invention, is coming back! Thanks to the Millennium Point Charitable Trust we are able to inspire a new cohort of children and their teachers.
“We will be working a with our partners from the School of Mechanical Engineering, the University of Birmingham and a cohort of young engineers to develop children’s interest (particularly girls and children from BAME backgrounds) in engineering/STEM and increase their understanding of the part problem-solving, creative thinking and team-work play in engineering.”
Help save The Play House
The Play House have an exciting program ahead for 2021-22, bringing creative activities into children’s education. The COVID-19 crises has however hit the organisation hard. The Play House need your support in order to continue helping thousands of children in economically challenging areas of the West Midlands. You can support them by clicking below to donate on their website.

Profits from our commercial activity are invested by the Millennium Point Charitable Trust into projects, events and initiatives which support the growth of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and education in the West Midlands.
Our award winning events and conference venue just got better, with a new £350,000 investment to upgrade our 354 seat Auditorium.
Originally opening as the first IMAX cinema in Birmingham, our Auditorium has been a popular destination for large-scale events, conferences, esports tournaments and screenings, and is one of 17 diverse events spaces available at Millennium Point.
Transformed to new heights
We’re always looking to reach new heights and this investment was a great opportunity to transform the Auditorium to the next level for clients and visitors. We’ve installed a new 10m x 3m participant stage area beneath the 16 m x 10 m giant screen to provide greater space and flexibility for panel events, presentations, and live performances.
Hybrid and Virtual Event Capabilities
We’ve also recently launched our new range of hybrid and virtual event packages. To support this we’ve upgraded our AV equipment which includes an M32R digital mixing desk with 40 input channels and high fidelity audio; an intelligent LED lighting system including a dozen moving wash lights and spot lights; mounted Panasonic PTC-280 cameras controlled remotely for high quality live streaming and a Kramer 8×8 Matrix switcher which allows switching of screen content seamlessly.
Additionally, six trusses have been installed around the Auditorium creating 30 more opportunities for clients to add their own lighting equipment to further enhance their event.
Equipped with a new recording studio
The upgrades don’t stop there! We’ve added new studio spaces alongside the upgraded Auditorium, to allow for live streamed performances, meetings and debates.
Flexible Platform space below Auditorium
The Auditorium is supported by our Platform space, located directly below and features a fully licensed bar, AV equipment and provides additional room for networking, dinners, and drinks receptions.
Millennium Point team proud of results
Rebecca Delmore, Commercial Director at Millennium Point said: “Without a doubt the events sector has transformed considerably over the past year, but alongside the challenges that have been faced there are huge opportunities to embrace new technologies and open up events to a much broader and more diverse audience, both on and off-site.
“We’re proud to be able to offer best in class facilities and hospitality for visitors and event organisers to enjoy here at Millennium Point. With this investment in our auditorium we are also supporting and embracing the future of hybrid events to ensure that, wherever audiences are based, they can enjoy a high-quality experience.”
